It is the first question almost every business owner asks, and the hardest one to get a straight answer to. Quotes for the same job in Auckland can range from $900 to $20,000. Here is what sits behind those numbers so you can judge a quote properly.
Typical Auckland price bands in 2026
These are the bands we see across Auckland for a business website. Your quote may sit outside them for good reasons, but this is the shape of the market.
- $900 to $1,800. A template site, lightly changed. Usually five pages, stock photos and text you supply. Fine for a brand new trade business that needs a presence this month.
- $2,500 to $5,000. The band most small businesses land in. Custom layout, your photos, copy written for search, contact forms that work, set up properly in Google.
- $5,000 to $12,000. A larger site with service pages for each thing you do, location pages, blog, booking or quote tools, and proper analytics.
- $12,000 and up. Online shops with real stock rules, member logins, customer portals, or anything that talks to software you already run.
What actually moves the price
Page count matters less than people expect. These are the things that genuinely change the number on the quote.
- Who writes the words. Copy is the slowest part of any build. If the agency writes it, expect to pay for that time. If you write it, the build is cheaper and usually slower to finish.
- Photography. Stock photos are free to use and look like stock photos. A half day with a photographer changes how the whole site feels.
- Custom design versus template. A template is faster and cheaper. A custom design costs more because someone draws every screen before anyone writes code.
- Functionality. A contact form is simple. Taking bookings, payments or stock levels is software, and software takes time to build and test.
- Search work. A site that is built to be found costs more than one that is simply built. Page structure, headings, speed and schema markup all take deliberate effort.
The costs that are easy to miss
The build price is not the whole picture. Budget for these too.
- Domain name. Around $30 to $60 a year for a .co.nz.
- Hosting. $10 to $40 a month for a small business site. Cheap hosting is the most common cause of a slow website.
- Email. Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, roughly $10 to $20 per person per month.
- Maintenance. Updates, backups and security. Either you do it or you pay someone. Sites that get neither are the ones that get hacked.
How to tell a fair quote from a bad one
Ask these four questions before you sign anything.
- Do I own the site and the domain? The answer should be yes, in writing. Some cheap monthly plans keep ownership with the agency, so leaving means starting again.
- Can I edit it myself? You should be able to change text, prices and photos without paying an hourly rate.
- How fast will it load on a phone? Ask for a target. Most people who visit your site are on a phone on mobile data.
- What happens after launch? A site that goes live and is never touched again slowly stops working. Find out who is responsible for updates.
What we would spend it on first
If your budget is tight, put it here in this order. Speed on phones, then a clear way to get in touch on every page, then words that match what your customers search for. Design polish matters, and it matters less than those three.
If you already have a site and you are not sure whether it is doing its job, we will look at it and tell you what we find. There is no charge for that.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a small business website cost in Auckland?
Most small business sites in Auckland land between $2,500 and $8,000. Under $1,500 usually means a template with very little customisation. Over $15,000 usually means custom functionality such as a booking system, a member login or a shop with complex rules.
Is a cheap website worth it?
It depends what you give up. A cheap site is fine if it loads fast, works on a phone and makes it easy to get in touch. It is poor value if you cannot edit it, it takes five seconds to load, or it never appears in Google.
Do I pay monthly or once?
Both models exist. A one-off build plus a small hosting fee is the most common. Monthly plans spread the cost but check whether you own the site if you leave.
How long does a website take to build?
A straightforward business site takes three to five weeks from brief to launch. Most of the delay is waiting on content, not the build.
