The honest answer is: it depends on what you sell and who you are up against. But "it depends" is not a budget, so here are the real numbers we see in Auckland accounts in 2026 and how to think about them.
Google Ads has two costs, not one
The first is ad spend, which goes to Google every time someone clicks your ad. The second is management, which is what you pay someone (us, another agency, or your own time) to build, watch and adjust the campaign. People often quote one and forget the other. You need both in the budget.
What a click costs in Auckland
Cost per click is set by auction, so it moves with competition. From the accounts we run and the planner data we check, typical Auckland ranges look like this:
- Trades and home services (plumber, electrician, roofer): $6 to $18 per click. Emergency terms sit at the top.
- Professional services (lawyer, accountant, mortgage): $8 to $30 per click. Some legal terms go higher.
- Retail and e-commerce: $0.80 to $4 per click on Shopping, more on broad search terms.
- Health and wellness (dentist, physio, clinic): $4 to $12 per click.
- IT, security and CCTV: $5 to $14 per click.
- Hospitality and events: $1 to $5 per click.
These are ranges, not promises. A well-built account with tight keywords and good ads pays less per click than a lazy one, because Google rewards relevance with a better Quality Score.
Turning clicks into a budget
Work backwards from enquiries. If one in ten clicks becomes an enquiry (a fair starting assumption for a decent landing page) and a click costs $10, an enquiry costs about $100. If you want 20 enquiries a month, that is $2,000 in spend. Then ask whether 20 enquiries at $100 each makes sense against what a customer is worth to you. If a new customer is worth $1,500 and you close one in four enquiries, you are paying $400 to win $1,500. That is a campaign worth running.
If the maths does not work at your prices, Google Ads is the wrong channel for now and we will tell you that in the first meeting. Sending paid traffic to a page that does not convert is the fastest way to waste money.
What management should include
A fixed monthly fee should cover keyword research, negative keyword lists (the terms you do not want to pay for), ad copy and testing, conversion tracking that actually records calls and forms, landing page checks, weekly bid and budget adjustments, and a report you can read in five minutes. If the report is just a screenshot of impressions, you are paying for a dashboard, not management.
Where budgets get wasted
- Broad match with no negatives. You end up paying for "free", "jobs", "DIY" and every suburb you do not serve.
- No conversion tracking. Without it, Google's automated bidding has nothing to learn from and you cannot tell which keywords bring calls.
- Sending ads to the homepage. A page built for the exact search term converts two to three times better.
- Judging it after one week. The first month is a learning period. Most accounts look expensive in week one and settle by week six.
- Slow mobile site. Most Auckland searches are on a phone. A page that takes five seconds to load loses half the clicks you paid for.
Our recommendation for a first campaign
Start with Search only, one campaign, five to ten tightly matched keywords, ads that mention Auckland and your suburb, a landing page with a phone number at the top, and call tracking. Spend $40 to $70 a day. Review it every week for six weeks, then decide whether to scale, change or stop. That is how we run it, and it keeps the risk small while the data comes in.

Frequently asked questions
What is a realistic starting budget for Google Ads in Auckland?
For most local service businesses, $1,000 to $2,000 a month in ad spend plus management is enough to get clear data within the first month. Below about $600 a month the campaign rarely gets enough clicks to learn from.
How much does Google Ads management cost?
Agencies in Auckland typically charge $400 to $1,500 a month depending on account size. We quote a fixed monthly fee in writing before we start, and you keep ownership of the ad account.
How quickly will I see enquiries?
Search campaigns can bring calls in the first week. Give it 4 to 6 weeks before judging results, because the first month is spent finding which keywords and ads convert.
